TasRail (2009)

Tasrail (officially Tasmanian Railway Pty Ltd) is the Government of Tasmania-owned corporation that has operated the mainline railways in Tasmania since 2009.

Established under the Rail Company Act 2009,[1] in September 2009 the Tasmanian Government and Pacific National formally entered into a business sale agreement for purchase of the Tasmanian rail business.[2] TasRail was created combining these above rail (rolling stock) and business assets with the below rail assets (track and associated infrastructure) for which the State had assumed responsibility for in 2007,[3] forming a vertically integrated rail operator.[1]

On 13 December 2011, TasRail signed an agreement to purchase 17 new locomotives from a consortium of Progress Rail Services and Downer Rail to replace the railroad's entire locomotive fleet, a contract worth A$60 million.[4] Deliveries were expected to begin in 2013.[4]
